About the AACD and Cosmetic
Dentistry |

Mission:
The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry’s Charitable
Foundation’s (AACDCF) purpose is to serve the philanthropic
efforts of the AACD. It maintains three programs.
Give Back A Smile
This program was developed to address a need in the communities
of the members of the AACD. Volunteer members of the AACD agree
to restore the broken and damaged teeth of survivors of domestic
violence. Survivors know that bruises and scars will fade but
broken and missing teeth will not. Our generous dentists erase
that memory by restoring the smiles at no cost to the survivor
thereby restoring their lives.
Whitening Program
This program was developed as an additional way the dentists can
support the AACDCF. Ultradent and Discus Dental have agreed to
donate whitening kits to volunteer dentists. The dental office
then offers the whitening kits to their patient base for a
donation of $225 to the AACDCF. These funds go directly to
supporting the programs of the AACDCF. This brilliant program
allows dentists, patients, and the sponsoring companies an
opportunity to restore lives.
Disaster Relief Fund
The catastrophic effects of the storms of 2005 in the Gulf
region inspired the leaders of the AACD and AACDCF to develop a
at ready disaster relief program to support our members. In the
first year of the program we were able to raise and distribute
over $80,000 to members whose practices were directly affected
by Katrina and Rita. In 2006 the fund assisted a member on the
east coast that was recovering from the major flooding during
the summer in that region. The Disaster Relief Fund stands ready
to help our members in the case of future disasters.

July 19, 2001, Madison, WI - The American Academy of Cosmetic
Dentistry (AACD) located in Madison, WI has won the Award of
Excellence and the prestigious Summit Award in the 2001 Associations
Advance America Awards program, a national competition sponsored by
the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), Washington,
D.C. Each year, only eight programs nationally are selected to receive
the annual Summit Award.
The AACD received the award for its program for survivors of domestic
violence, Give Back a Smile™ (GBAS). The Give Back A Smile program was
established by the AACD out of a desire to give something back to the
community, specifically, to help survivors of unfortunate
circumstances related to domestic abuse. Through this program, AACD
members volunteer their time and talents in restoring the smiles of
survivors of domestic violence who have suffered damage to, or lost,
their front teeth due to abusive attacks. Through the program, the
AACD's goal is to help restore the appearance and self-esteem levels
of those who have been abused.
AACD President Dr. Arthur Chal of Phoenix, AZ says, "The Give Back A
Smile program is an opportunity for AACD members to contribute to
others in need with our skills, compassion, and ability to create
smiles. By doing so, we can restore a smile and also help someone
rebuild their life." How the program works:
- Domestic violence survivors who have
suffered dental injuries during a violent attack can call the Give
Back A Smile national toll free number, 800.773.GBAS (4227)
- The survivor then undergoes
screening sessions with the National Coalition Against Domestic
Violence staff and a local counselor.
- Eligibility includes that the
injury is to the front teeth and is a result of domestic violence
from a spouse or significant other.
Additionally, applicants must be out of the relationship for at
least one year.
If eligible, they are then referred to AACD's Give Back A Smile
program for a referral.
The survivor is then referred to a local member dentist who makes
the final determination of eligibility and, if approved, begins
treatment.
"The AACD's Give Back A Smile program truly
embodies the spirit of the Associations Advance America campaign. It
is an honor and inspiration to showcase this activity as an example of
the many contributions associations are making to advance American
society," remarked ASAE President Michael S. Olson, CAE.

My Story of
Abuse
 |
|
| |
|
In 2001 I thought that I had met the man of
my dreams. He was tall and handsome and I though that he was
great guy after all a man that loves his Mama knows how to treat
a woman. It didn’t take long for me to realize that that wasn’t
the case with this man.
About two months into our relationship it
started off with a slap across the face. Then it quickly turned
into chocking me until I would almost pass out. I can’t count
the times that I would wake up with the blood vessels in my eyes
busted because he had tired to choke me out. But I stayed
because I loved him and he professed his dying love for me. And
a part of me really believes he would change. But as time went
on his drinking and drug use only got worse. And I began to
drink more and more as a way to cope with the situation or so
that I could just stay numb.
One night in a drunken rage he got a knife
and went to slash my face up so that no man would even want to
look at me again and I them my arms up in defense and the knife
went across my arm not only cutting skin but muscle too. I
thought the bleeding would never stop but once he realized what
he had done he at least drove me to the hospital even as drunk
as he was.
While the doctor asked how I got cut he hid
outside until they were through stitching me up. I can remember
the doctor saying that it looked like a defensive wound but I
still stuck to my story that I had cut my own self while slicing
meat. And he was so remorseful at what he had done that I
forgave him again, but the beating continued.
I even became a master in hiding the black
eyes with make up. I got those continually. I’d get rid off one
black eye completely and he would black my eyes again but still
I stayed even after he hit me in the back of my head so hard
that I landed in ICU for three days with a brain injury which as
a result left me walking on a cane. But I’m not on a cane
anymore because God delivered me from that cane by his grace and
mercy.
You know there are so many times that I
could have been carried out in a body bag. But God had other
plans for me and his plan was for me to walk out of that
situation so that I could live and to live for him and share my
story with others that they would know that thee hope out
there. By the grace of God I walked out of that situation a
little over two years ago and I never looked back again. I’m
living back in a homeless shelter again due to the injury. It’s
been difficult to find work that I am physically able to do but
I have faith in God and I know that he will open doors for me.
He will send that job my way so that one day. I will be able to
truly stand on my own.
Yours truly,
Charlotte Jackson
A survivor of Domestic violence, not a victim.

Now that she has completed her treatment, she
writes:
May 11, 2007
Dear Dr. Williams,
"I am Ms. Charlotte Jackson and was accepted
into the Give Back a Smile Program. I would like to share how my
life has changed after being in this wonderful program. I
am able to smile with confidence and my self-esteem has been
built up. I can finally smile without covering up my mouth. In
the past, I was so embarrassed to talk or smile, but now I am
able to stand before a group of people, especially at my church,
and feel confident in my speaking.
I will forever be thankful to Suwanee Dental
Care, Dr. William B. Williams and the Give Back A Smile Program
for changing my life forever."
Sincerely,
Charlotte Jackson |
